Nelson Mullins has committed itself as a leadership partner for Lawyers for Racial Justice, a project by Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) focused on systemic change to support racial justice. As a leadership partner, Nelson Mullins will co-create Lawyers for Racial Justice pro bono projects with L4GG and lead publicly in the program's efforts.

L4GG identifies the increasing need for this action in the face of an unprecedented public health emergency, a downturn in the economy, and massive civil unrest, which are disproportionately borne by Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color. Through Lawyers for Racial Justice, L4GG will mine its resources to drive change in the short and long term, bolstering racial justice organizations with its vast network of pro bono attorneys from partner law firms.

The program will engage in long-term systemic work to dismantle inequitable policies. Pro bono attorneys will conduct legal research and analysis into high-priority focus areas, draft model legislation in collaboration with community partners, and provide ongoing support to those partners as they advocate for equitable legislation, and will work with frontline organizations and pro bono clinics to give legal help to individuals who face the harmful effects of discriminatory policies in place now.

Nelson Mullins contributed to one of the first projects offered through Lawyers for Racial Justice, the School Policing Project, an undertaking to research state and local laws pertaining to the use of law enforcement in schools. Research was done by D.C. associate David Barnes, Charlotte associate Ariel Roberson, Fort Lauderdale associate Nicole Villamar, and Atlanta associate George Ray. Their work was part of a 50-state research project and, based on the findings, L4GG will work with other partner firms to draft state-level legislation on the necessity and activity of School Resource Officers.

Nelson Mullins is a frequent L4GG partner. In June, the firm helped establish remote COVID-19 clinics based in the Southeast for nonprofits and small businesses in need of economic relief. L4GG is known for its effective and efficient grassroots mobilization of pro bono legal help for organizations, clinics, and individuals who need it.
