How Engineers Will Determine Why NYC Building Renovation Buckled

A recent structural failure amid a redevelopment in Midtown Manhattan has shifted attention from emergency stabilization efforts to a complex investigation involving engineers, legal teams, insurers, and project stakeholders. After two load-bearing structural columns buckled on the building's 21st floor, experts emphasized that determining the cause will require a comprehensive review of design documents, construction activities, field conditions, and project records. Investigators are evaluating whether the failure resulted from design assumptions, construction sequencing, temporary conditions, existing building characteristics, or a combination of factors.

While engineers focus on understanding the technical causes of the failure, legal and risk-management processes begin almost immediately after such incidents occur. Nelson Mullins partner, Robert Alfert, provided his thoughts on what will transpire in the wake of this structural failure for Engineering News-Record. 

Alfert says that following an event such as this, “project participants immediately begin preserving work product, including contracts, insurance policies, structural and shop drawings, contractor daily reports, inspection records, BIM models, photographs and other documentation while retaining independent engineering experts to conduct their own root-cause analyses.”
