Law360 Tax Authority
Nelson Mullins partner John Balboni was recently featured in a Q&A with Law360 Tax Authority, discussing the future of the federal opportunity zone program and how the firm is preparing for potential legislative changes.
Balboni, who co-leads the firm’s Opportunity Zone group, provided insights on Opportunity Zones 2.0—proposed legislation that could make the program permanent, enhance transparency, and expand benefits for rural and low-income communities.
With the current program set to expire in 2026, Balboni noted a renewed wave of client interest in the potential extension of the program.
What are you hearing from clients right now who may be looking to do opportunity zone deals?
Excited. The clients ... we worked with throughout probably the last eight years or so in this space … they are excited to see the extension and permanence of the program. Again, this is an excellent piece of legislation that does promote economic activity and growth in certain areas.
At the time of the article, the legislation was still working its way through Congress. It was signed into law on July 4.
Balboni emphasized that Nelson Mullins has expanded its multidisciplinary team to more than 20 attorneys across tax, real estate, housing, and corporate practices, making the firm well-positioned to help clients navigate both current regulations and any future changes that may arise.
