Nelson Mullins Colorado partner Richard Levin has been working with Friends of Nigerian Basketball to help Africa's only men's Olympics basketball team compete for gold in Tokyo this summer.
In May, Levin got an email from an old friend and the coach of Team Nigeria, Mike Brown, asking for help. Brown is also associate head coach of the Golden State Warriors. "He said, 'Ricky, I've been named head coach of the Nigerian Olympic basketball team and I set up an organization, Friends of Nigerian Basketball,’” Levin recalled. “I said, ‘Mike, I’d be happy to help,’ so we started looking at how as an organization we could help.” So far, Nelson Mullins has helped the nonprofit with corporate governance, tax compliance, and immigration and has introduced them to donors.
Friends of Nigerian Basketball also sees itself as a way to raise the country up as a competitor on the world stage, not just in athletics but also as a world power. Levin told The American Lawyer that the firm's commitment to the nonprofit also reflects a larger mission. “This fits in very nicely with our commitment to community service and social justice,” he said. “Helping to support the only team from Africa in Olympic men’s basketball is something we’re very proud of.”
