Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the California Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Bill, citing concerns that it imposed strict regulations on all AI applications without distinguishing between low- and high-risk systems. He argued that this approach could hinder innovation and unnecessarily burden companies. In conjunction with the veto, Newsom announced 17 new bills addressing various aspects of AI regulation, including clarifications on personal information under the California Consumer Privacy Act, prohibitions on the use of digital replicas without consent, and requirements for AI developers to disclose training data. These measures aim to create a more nuanced framework for AI regulation while fostering responsible innovation.
