On Thursday, the North Carolina General Assembly reconvened to pass a $604 million disaster relief bill for victims of Hurricane Helene. Senate Bill 743 received unanimous support in both the Senate and House of Representatives. Governor Roy Cooper is expected to sign the bill before lawmakers return on Nov. 19 to potentially consider more funding.
This additional relief package includes:
- $100 million for water and wastewater infrastructure repair loans;
- $100 million for cash flow loans to local governments;
- $75 million to match federal disaster relief funds;
- $50 million for unmet needs not covered by insurance;
- $50 million for school repairs; and
- $50 million for small business bridge loans.
In a bipartisan initiative earlier this month, the legislature approved the initial $273 million disaster relief bill, which Cooper signed into law. To date, both bills bring the state’s relief funding to $800 million.
