Katy is the co-chair of the firm's Data Breach and Privacy Litigation Group. Katy is shaped by her service as a U.S. Marine officer, and she brings over two decades of military leadership experience to her crisis management and disputes practice. Serving first as Marine prosecutor turned civil trial attorney and litigator, Katy’s practice focuses on consumer protection and advertising class action litigation, government and internal investigations, and data breach and privacy litigation across the country in state and federal courts. She combines her operational and team-building skills with her in-house experience to guide global clients through complex legal challenges and crises.

Katy is a Certified Information Privacy Professional US and a Certified Information Privacy Manager. She also remains active in the Marine Reserves and is a lieutenant colonel. During her military service, Katy completed three combat deployments and a command tour where she led over 500 Marines and sailors located across three states. In her final active-duty military assignment, she was the senior Marine prosecutor for the National Capital Region and first-chaired several felony trials.

  • Lead trial counsel for U.S. insurance company that experienced a ransomware incident both prosecuting claims against a third-party vendor and defending a class action on its behalf.
  • Managed data breach incident response investigations to include regulatory responses.
  • As Global Data Protection Officer, designed a global privacy program that touched more than 20 countries.
  • Served as trial counsel for a U.S. chemical company in multidistrict litigation involving claims for personal injury related to alleged groundwater contamination, which culminated in a seven-week jury trial.
  • Defended healthcare fraud investigations and prosecution in federal court.
  • Successfully defended and prosecuted non-solicitation, breach of contract, and trade secret claims in state and federal courts.
  • Acted as lead counsel for a U.S. company that was a victim of fraud.
  • Acted as lead trial counsel for an NBA athlete in the defense of a breach of contract action. Secured a dismissal on all claims.
  • Defended multifaceted companies that have been served with a non-party and/or government subpoena(s) and investigative demands.
  • Advised global e-commerce company on advertising and marketing best practices and, when necessary, responded to regulatory agencies.
  • Developed a policy for the online rating and reviews process for an e-commerce company.
  • Advised a direct selling company on the Federal Trade Commission’s Guides Concerning Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.
  • Defended multiple global construction companies in various contract disputes before dispute resolution boards and international arbitration to include the representation of the New Doha International Airport on a variety of contract matters. This multibillion-dollar project was one of Qatar's largest transportation infrastructure projects in history.
  • Pro bono representation of service members requesting discharge upgrades.
  • Pro bono representation of a service member who was wrongfully convicted.

Practice Areas

Katy is currently a lieutenant colonel. She transitioned to the Marine Reserves in 2016 after serving nearly 14 years on active duty with two Iraq deployments and one Afghanistan deployment.
