- Served as the Speaker Pro-Tempore to the SC House of Representatives and as the Chairman of the Labor, Commerce and Industry (LCI) Committee of the South Carolina House of Representatives for 14 years
- This Committee handles all legislation passing through the General Assembly concerning issues such as professional practice laws, labor laws, insurance, banking, small business, real estate, regulated utilities, economic development, and industry related procurement issues
- Worked extensively with numerous state agencies, including the state Budget and Control Board, on various legislative matters as chairman and Speaker Pro Tem

- Served on Travelers Rest City Council (1986 – 1990)
- Served as Mayor Pro Tempore of Travelers Rest (1988 – 1990)
