Peter Munk practices in the area of commercial, business, and employment litigation. A former associate, he joined the firm in 2015.
1. Describe how you feel about your career now that you’ve made partner.
I love solving clients’ complex problems and appreciate the opportunity to do so every day as a partner at Nelson Mullins.
2. What are your key components to being successful in your career?
Maintain perspective: My job as a litigator is not simply to prosecute or defend lawsuits, but to solve problems. Litigation can be a highly effective tool to achieve a desired end, but it is not the end itself. Each engagement must start with a clear understanding of the client’s goals, and it is my job to create, and apply, an effective strategy to accomplish those goals.
3. Who had the greatest influence in your career that helped drive you to partnership?
My wife, Candice, holding down the fort with 1… 2… 3… 4… and now 5 little girls! I also owe a debt of gratitude to patient mentors and colleagues who took an interest in my development as a new lawyer and, on top of their own significant responsibilities, went above and beyond to provide meaningful feedback not only on work product, but also the intangibles of practicing law.
4. What’s the best piece of advice you would give an associate who wants to make partner?
You can’t teach experience. In most cases, your ability to efficiently and effectively accomplish a task is proportional to the number of times you have performed that task. Seize every opportunity to do something new, even if — especially if — it is outside your comfort zone.
