Structural Engineer Claims Reinforcement Was Never Installed on Troubled NYC Tower

In ENR’s coverage of the ongoing investigation into the structural failure at a building conversion in Midtown Manhattan, Nelson Mullins construction attorney Robert Alfert highlighted the significant legal and financial risks facing the project stakeholders. 

As investigators examine claims that required column reinforcement steel may never have been installed, Alfert noted that while project participants often begin by cooperating to determine what happened, the magnitude of potential liability typically leads parties to prioritize their own interests and defenses. He emphasized that the severity of the potential claims, insurance exposure, and contractual disputes makes it likely that owners, contractors, engineers, and other involved parties will eventually seek to protect themselves as responsibility for the failure is determined.
