Pro Bono Spotlight: Candace Friel

N.C. Bar Blog

In an article from the North Carolina Bar Association's NCBarBlog on March 22, 2023, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Winston-Salem partner Candace Friel was featured as a part of the blog's Pro Bono Spotlight series.

Friel has been with the firm since 2007 and focuses her practice on healthcare and commercial litigation. She is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Health Law Section.

Friel’s pro bono practice includes working with driver’s license restoration clinics, Rebuild North Carolina, Wills for Habitat clinics, and much more. For Rebuild North Carolina, she assisted a client seeking funds to rebuild their home after Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Matthew.

Friel organized and led the first Wills for Habitat project in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with the firm’s pro bono resource administrator, Norah Rogers, in 2015. The project is now an annual event at the Winston-Salem office, where they have a clinic to prepare wills for Habitat for Humanity homeowners. The program has been put on hold since the pandemic, but Friel wants to make sure that all homeowners in the area will have the opportunity to have a will for their property.

According to the website, Friel found her “Passion for pro bono work in projects where she gets to work with clients one-on-one, especially at home in the Triad.”
