The Western Producer
Ambassador David Wilkins spoke at the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region panel in Saskatoon along with other former ambassadors regarding the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Though the agreement is stalled, Wilkins and the other ambassadors said they thought the trade deal should be ratified as soon as possible.
"It's crunch time; it's time to get it approved. Americans want it approved. Canada approved it. Two years is long enough; let's get it done," Wilkins said. He also gave some advice to current American ambassadors in Canada. "Get out from behind your desk in Ottawa, talk to as many Canadians as you can...I always said 90% of what I did was just showing up."
The USMCA is a deal proposed under President Trump that would increase environmental and labor regulations and incentivize the domestic production of cars and trucks. Wilkins chairs Nelson Mullins' public policy and international law practice group, with a special focus in U.S.-Canada relations.
