Perspectives From Outside Counsel – A Panel Discussion of 2022 Robocall Regulatory and Enforcement Developments

Stir/Shaken Enterprise Summit

Hosted by: Sip Forum

Washington partner Steve Augustino is to present on a webinar for the Stir/Shaken Enterprise Summit in October. Augustino’s presentation, “Perspectives From Outside Counsel – A Panel Discussion of 2022 Robocall Regulatory and Enforcement Developments,” will explore the efforts industry and government stakeholders have embarked on since the passage of the TRACED Act in 2019, which targeted the rise in illegal robocalls.

The TRACED Act, a law that provides the tools to hold bad actors responsible for illegal robocalls, required the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to initiate proceedings to require call authentication technologies to be implemented to identify and deter illegal telephone number spoofing, increased the FCC’s ability to fine domestic and foreign originators of illegal robocalls, and authorized actions to combat certain illegal scams.  FCC rules implementing the TRACED Act require virtually all voice service providers to implement anti-robocall technologies, to collect certain information on customers, and to implement robocall mitigation techniques in their networks.  Increasingly, the FCC has taken action against both enterprises originating calls and voice service providers on whose networks the calls traverse.

Augustino with be joining fellow panelist Glenn Richards, partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, and moderator Kevin Rupy, partner at Wiley Rein LLP. They will discuss how these anti-robocall initiatives are driving change throughout the voice industry, and how industry stakeholders may need to consider adjustments to their business operations and compliance efforts in order to make meaningful reductions in the illegal robocall traffic.  The panel also will discuss technologies that block or label spam calls and what the industry is doing to fix errors in the blocking or labeling of valid calls.

The panel is free to any interested attendee.

Augustino is a leading practitioner in anti-robocall technologies and Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) matters.  He regularly counsels voice service providers, technology companies, and enterprises on their rights and obligations relating to robocall traffic.
