Nelson Mullins to Host Inaugural ULI Coastal Forum

Coastal real estate development, planning, and environmental professionals will have an opportunity to discuss national issues and view best practice design strategies for resilient coastal development during the inaugural Urban Land Institute (ULI) Coastal Forum on Oct. 8 hosted by Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in its Boston office. The Forum is part of ULI’s Fall Meeting in Boston.

Charleston attorney Newman “Jack” Smith, who helped organize the event, will chair the morning panel discussions on national resilient coastal development issues and Boston resilient real estate projects that incorporate best practice design strategies to manage the effects of rising sea levels and other climate impacts. Forum participants will then set sail in a private charter, touring exciting resilient coastal development projects along the Boston waterfront.

The Coastal Forum is a project to bring together leaders in real estate, land use, insurance, finance, and climate resilience to share best practices and information for coastal development from around the country. This Forum offers a dialogue-based setting to analyze trends, share tools and resources, and tour examples of innovative waterfront projects in Boston.

Smith practices in the areas of environmental law and litigation, administrative/regulatory law, land use law, and constitutional law. His environmental and land use practice includes permitting and entitlements for land development, hazardous waste site management and remediation and brownfield development, and related regulatory counseling. He serves on the Urban Land Institute’s Sustainable Development Council and as the member representative for ULI on the NOAA Digital Coast Partnership. He is also the Charleston, S.C. Metro Chamber of Commerce representative on the Charleston Resilience Network.
