Columbia partners William Hubbard and James Burns offered insights on how lawyers can build a more loving and inclusive society three years after the fatal attack on an African-American bible study group at Mother Emanuel AME Church. The CLE was sponsored by the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Conference.
Burns, who served as former S.C. Governor Nikki Haley's chief of staff and now practices financial services litigation, business litigation, and government relations, spoke on the aftermath of the attack and how it impacted our society. Hubbard also practices business litigation with the Firm and is former president of the ABA. He spoke on the trial and its impact on the judicial system.
Attendees of the event also had the opportunity to discuss race in America and what lawyers can do to make society more inclusive. The Young Lawyers division of the ABA is a resource for attorneys who are early in their career. They regularly host and sponsor events to further attorneys in their career goals, industry knowledge, and cultural awareness.
