HCCA San Juan Regional Healthcare Compliance Conference

Hosted by: Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA)

Partners Gabe Imperato and Bob Wade will speak at Health Care Compliance Association’s (HCCA) San Juan Regional Healthcare Compliance Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 4-5.

Serving as program co-chair and a conference planner, Imperato will also be moderating the “Government Enforcement Panel,” alongside panelists Brenda Rosado Aponte with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, Rafeal Lopez, an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico, Carlos Santiago Rosario with PR Medicaid, and Jose Luis Soto with the Office of the Inspector General. The group will provide an overview of the Department of Justice’s current criminal and civil enforcement priorities, along with a discussion of key enforcement initiatives from the POV of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Panelists will also examine the government’s evolving approach to Medicaid fraud enforcement, highlighting recent trends and areas of focus.

With his co-panelist, Jose Escobar with Mennonite General Hospital, Inc., Wade will be speaking on the panel, “Hospital Compliance and Best Practices,” where the pair will focus on compliance program best practices, including monitoring and documenting compliant physician financial arrangement, auditing and monitoring reimbursement, reporting and hotline best practices, and board accountability.

With this, Imperato and Wade will co-lead the panel, “Foundations of Compliance; Stark, Anti-Kickback and False Claims Act” where they will take a deep dive into the relevant laws and how they intersect in practice, with particular attention to the role of the False Claims Act. The two will discuss recent enforcement actions that illustrate current regulatory trends and conclude with practical strategies organizations can implement to mitigate risk and strengthen compliance efforts.

Imperato serves as the office managing partner for the Fort Lauderdale office and leads an attorney team that focuses their practice on healthcare enforcement, compliance, and litigation matters. His personal practice involves representing individuals and organizations accused of healthcare fraud, and assisting and advising healthcare organizations on corporate governance and compliance matters.

Wade advises healthcare organizations nationwide on Stark Law compliance, physician compensation structuring, fair market value analysis, commercial reasonableness assessments, self-disclosure strategy, and enforcement defense under the federal physician self-referral statute.
