Emerging Tech and Regulation Presentations, Vanderbilt Law School Program on Law & Innovation

Raleigh senior associate Jeff Kelly presented guest lectures on issues related to emerging technology and regulations impacting the practice of law as part of Vanderbilt Law School’s Program on Law & Innovation core curriculum. Vanderbilt’s Program on Law & Innovation is designed to equip law students with interdisciplinary tools needed to navigate and influence the unprecedented social, economic, and technological changes affecting the practice of law.

Kelly first spoke to students participating in “Data in Law Practice,” which is an interdisciplinary course on data literacy and analytics that is co-taught with the Chief Data Scientist of Vanderbilt’s Data Science Institute. Kelly introduced students to challenges presented by artificial intelligence and algorithmic bias, and led discussions on the policy challenges created by modern data analytics. He also presented to students taking the “Law as a Business” course, which explores innovation in modern legal practice and corporate legal departments. Kelly spoke to students about potential regulatory changes in the practice of law and new business models that some jurisdictions are creating to allow for the scalable delivery of legal services.

Kelly focuses his practice on areas of emerging technology, assisting clients with complex litigation challenges and outside corporate counsel services. Kelly is a Fellow of the Duke Center on Law & Technology and frequently works with students on interdisciplinary projects. He is also the Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Future of Law Committee and an Advisory Member of North Carolina State Bar’s Subcommittee Studying Regulatory Reform.
