2026 White Collar Crime Institute
Hosted by: American Bar Association (ABA) Criminal Justice Section
Fort Lauderdale partner Gabe Imperato and Miami counsel Jon Sale will be speaking at the American Bar Association (ABA) Criminal Justice Section’s 2026 White Collar Crime Institute from March 10-13 in San Diego.
Alongside his panelists, Greg Demske with Goodwin Proctor, Lisa Re with Arnold and Porter, Sanford Teplitzky with Baker Donelson, and Meredith Williams, formerly with the Office of Inspector General, Imperato will moderate, “Stark Law, Anti-Kickback and EKRA Enforcement Developments.” This panel will provide an overview of the key prohibitions and exceptions under the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and EKRA, and how these laws intersect with False Claims Act liability. Panelists will highlight recent cases and settlements, discuss evolving enforcement trends, and identify leading compliance risks organizations should be watching.
Separately, Sale will participate in “Effective Sentencing Advocacy – Guidelines, Mitigation, and Data,” with his co-panelists, the Honorable Charles Breyer from the Northern District of California, Rebecca Brodey with Bourelly George and Brodey, the Honorable Trina Thompson from the Northern District of California, and Torrey Young with Seyfarth Shaw. Justine Harris with Harris Trzaskoma will moderate the panel, which will discuss effective strategies for mitigating white collar sentences, including approaches to loss calculations, the use of psychological evaluations, sentencing videos, and early restitution payments. Panelists will also discuss proposed amendments to the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, the role and limits of Judicial Sentencing Information Network (JSIN) data, and practical lessons on what does and does not persuade courts at sentencing.
Imperato serves as the office managing partner for the Fort Lauderdale office and leads an attorney team that focuses their practice on healthcare enforcement, compliance, and litigation matters. His personal practice involves representing individuals and organizations accused of healthcare fraud, and assisting and advising healthcare organizations on corporate governance and compliance matters.
Sale is a co-chair of the firm’s White Collar & Government Investigations Practice Group and is nationally regarded as a go-to attorney in complex white collar criminal defense matters. He is one of two attorneys in Florida who was designated by Chambers USA as an “eminent practitioner” in the white collar field.
The ABA Criminal Justice Section’s White Collar Crime Institute is a premier national forum, bringing together top practitioners, judges, academics, and enforcement officials to explore key legal, regulatory, and ethical issues in white collar crime.
