VETO OVERRIDE FAILS
The NC Senate failed by one vote to override Governor Cooper’s veto on requiring schools to open for in-class instruction. It was a partisan divide with one Democratic senator being absent. There is speculation that additional attempts will be made to override the veto. However, the question may be moot in a few days with the State Board and local school boards trying to open the schools for the remainder of the year. View article here.
STUDENT TESTING
Public school officials revealed that students are testing much more poorly since the pandemic occurred. In the past year, reading and math scores have significantly dropped, and the conclusion is that children just aren’t learning at the pace they need to learn. CONTENTIOUS COUNCIL OF STATE MEETING
Partisan bickering erupted again at the monthly Council of State meeting this week. The Council consists of the Governor, Lt. Governor, and other statewide elected officials. The meeting grew tense when one member of the Council wanted to immediately to open the schools to in-class instruction. View article here.
