Brandee J. Kowalzyk is an associate of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP who practices in Atlanta in the areas of commercial litigation, aviation, product liability, and pharmaceutical and medical device defense.

Ms. Kowalzyk’s recent experience includes serving as second-chair trial counsel in a multi-million dollar commercial action in Georgia Superior Court. In that role, Ms. Kowalzyk was active in all aspects of the successful defense of this lawsuit, including drafting multiple motions and briefs, participating in voir dire, arguing various motions in limine, and conducting the direct examinations of various key witnesses.

In her practice, Ms. Kowalzyk has deposed plaintiffs, plaintiffs’ experts, and other key witnesses. She has drafted and successfully argued various pre-trial motions. Ms. Kowalzyk has obtained numerous favorable settlements in cases arising from alleged product defects and commercial disputes. Ms. Kowalzyk co-authored an article in Law 360 Product Liability Law entitled "Defeating Joinder in Medical Device Litigation."

Pro-Bono/Community Activities

Active in the community, Ms. Kowalzky is a member of the board of directors for the Gold Shield Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at providing financial and other support to the families of police officers and firefighters who are injured or killed in the line of duty. Ms. Kowalzyk also heads the Atlanta office’s implementation of the Wills for Heroes program, a project that provides complimentary wills for emergency first response personnel through the United States.

Education and Prior Experience

In 2005, Ms. Kowalzyk earned a Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law, where she was a Moot Court Board Member and received honors for excellence in the Litigation Workshop. Ms. Kowalzyk remains active in the GSU College of Law alumni community, frequently volunteering her time to mentor law students, judge moot court competitions, and serve on various panels. In 1999, Ms. Kowalzyk earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Minot State University, where she served as editor in chief of the campus literary magazine. Before attending law school, Ms. Kowalzyk was managing editor of Pulp & Paper magazine, a monthly business-to-business magazine about the worldwide pulp and paper industry.

Ms. Kowalzyk is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the American Bar Association, and the National Native American Bar Association. She is admitted to practice in Georgia. Ms. Kowalzyk is an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.
