Nelson Mullins announces the relaunch of its Opportunity Zones Practice Group, reinforcing the firm’s commitment to supporting clients in unlocking the full potential of one of the most dynamic investment incentives in U.S. tax law.
The practice is led by partners John Balboni and Amanda Wilson, who bring decades of combined experience in tax, fund formation, real estate, capital markets and economic development. The team is well-versed advising clients—including investors, developers, fund sponsors, and financial institutions—on leveraging the advantages of the Opportunity Zones program.
This relaunch comes at a critical moment as lawmakers consider major legislative changes included in the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping package that could extend and modify provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the statute that originally created the Opportunity Zones program. If passed, the bill is expected to reinvigorate interest and activity in Qualified Opportunity Funds (QOFs) and related real estate and business investments.
“Our team has been involved with OZ investments since 2018 and has undertaken a wide array of transactions throughout the country. We can honestly say that “we’ve seen it all” in terms of OZ issues and have successfully navigated this statutory regime on behalf of our clients,” said Balboni. “Through our deep DC-based contacts, we are closely tracking the developments outlined in the Administration’s proposed legislative package. This statute remains a vital tool for community revitalization and economic growth, especially for rural areas.”
Nelson Mullins' Opportunity Zones attorneys provide end-to-end support, from deal structuring, capital stack creation/fund formation to compliance and exit strategies. As noted by Amanda Wilson, “Our multidisciplinary team is well-equipped to guide stakeholders through the regulatory and strategic complexities to achieve optimal outcomes. We work in collaboration with the firm’s Tax, Corporate, Real Estate, and Government Relations practices to provide seamless counsel across all facets of Opportunity Zone investments”.
As the regulatory landscape evolves, Nelson Mullins stands ready to advise both new and existing clients seeking to participate in the next wave of Opportunity Zone initiatives.
