Nelson Mullins Pro Bono Effort Helps Bring Atlanta’s City of Refuge Transformation Center to Life
Nelson Mullins is proud to celebrate the completion of City of Refuge’s Transformation Center on Atlanta’s Westside—a milestone project that will expand access to critical economic, health, wellness and housing resources for the surrounding community. The 37,000-square-foot facility brings together an entrepreneurship hub, mental health services, financial resources, fresh food access and 25 units of affordable housing, all designed to help individuals and families achieve long-term stability and success. The $15 million transformation center officially opened in January 2026.
For more than three years, Nelson Mullins provided comprehensive real estate pro bono legal support and played an integral role in bringing the Transformation Center to life. The firm managed all aspects of the project’s legal work, including land acquisition, partnership agreements with Westside Future Fund, financing and loan arrangements, and construction-related transactions. This effort reflects the firm’s longstanding commitment to advancing affordable housing and community development initiatives that create meaningful, lasting impact.
Andy Litvak and Abe Kannof, who have both worked alongside City of Refuge for more than a decade, led the firm’s efforts on the project.
“This project represents what’s possible when committed partners come together to invest in a community’s future,” said Litvak. “We were honored to support City of Refuge in bringing the Transformation Center to life. It’s an initiative that not only delivers critical resources and affordable housing but also helps strengthen and revitalize a historic Atlanta neighborhood for generations to come.”
The opening of the Transformation Center marks an important step in an ongoing, strategic effort to expand opportunity and equity across Atlanta’s Westside, and underscores the power of pro bono work to help scale projects that transform communities.
