Nelson Mullins Continues Robust Growth, Doubling Size of its Houston Office with Tax Controversy and Litigation Group

HOUSTON – Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP, a full-service national law firm with offices from coast to coast, today announced nine tax attorneys have joined its office in Houston, Texas. The group is joining the firm from Chamberlain Hrdlicka.

The firm welcomes Houston partners Juan Vasquez, Jr., David Calvillo, Stuart Clements, Peter Lowy, and David Medina, of counsel Keith Livesay, and associates Tania Albuja, Emmanuel Almaraz, and Tristan Montaque (joins July 8). Nelson Mullins opened its Houston office in April 2024 with 10 attorneys. The addition of this group brings the office headcount to 25.  

Vasquez Jr. will lead the firm’s nationwide Tax Controversy and Litigation Practice. Lowy will lead the firm’s State and Local Tax (SALT) practice. Medina is a former Justice of the Texas Supreme Court who will handle litigation, appellate, and Texas SALT matters. Calvillo will handle litigation and tax controversy matters. Clements will handle tax controversy and planning matters, with an emphasis on captive insurance issues.

Those joining the firm are also widely recognized by Best Lawyers in America, Chambers and Partners, Legal 500, and other publications. Vasquez Jr., Clements, Lowy, Medina, and Albuja are all ranked by Best Lawyers in their respective practice areas.  Vasquez Jr. and Calvillo have been Texas Super Lawyers for over a decade. Vasquez Jr. has a Band 2 ranking in Tax Litigation from Chambers and has been ranked for the last two decades and is also highly ranked in Legal 500 and other publications.

Vasquez and Lowy have each been awarded the ABA Tax Section’s nationwide Pro Bono award for their work in giving back to the community and both have served as Chair of the ABA Tax Section’s Court Procedure and Practice Committee. Lowy and Albuja are former Tax Court Clerks.  Additionally, Vasquez Jr. and Lowy serve as Adjunct Professors of Law at the University of Houston Law Center (UHLC) where they teach Tax Controversy and Litigation among other tax law classes.
