NEW YORK — Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP partner Alana Bassin was selected as the 2023 Product Liability Lawyer of the Year at the 2023 Women in Business Law Americas Awards that were held in New York City on June 8, 2023.

Bassin was among six finalists. Her award win was spurred by her commitment to women and diversity, equity, and inclusion in the profession, as well as a strong 2022. Bassin and her team bookended 2022 with two significant achievements — starting the year with a defense verdict in a multimillion-dollar, month-long Texas trial related to two child plaintiffs and finishing 2022 with a motions victory excluding expert testimony and granting summary judgment in the first bellwether case in a multi-plaintiff consolidated action against a medical device company in Massachusetts.

Bassin, who is managing partner of the firm’s Minneapolis office, has earned recognitions both in Minnesota and nationally during the last 12 months. Bassin was named an Attorney of the Year by the premier legal publication in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, Minnesota Lawyer, in January.

Her practice has seen Bassin represent Fortune 500 companies in products liability, commercial litigation, and general liability defense. She has defended individual and mass-tort actions across the country involving high-exposure catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases. Throughout her legal career, she has frequently spoken on the professional development of women in the legal community.

In addition to Bassin’s win, firm partner Kristin Ahr was a finalist for the Lawyer of the Year award in the labor and employment practice area. Based in West Palm Beach, Fla., Ahr focuses her practice on employment litigation and compliance and commercial litigation. She serves as counsel to a broad range of clients, public and private, in both federal and state courts, as well as before administrative agencies, and alternative dispute resolution forums.

The firm was also shortlisted for three jurisdictional awards — in the South, the Midwest, and the West. Those recognitions were based on a large-picture view of initiatives, demographics, and practitioners in each jurisdiction. Individual winners are judged on their professional accomplishments as well as their advocacy and influence within their fields between Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of the preceding year.
