Where Heightened Client Service Meets Fresh Revenue: Inside the World of Law Firm Ancillary Businesses

Jason Epstein was featured in The American Lawyer highlighting Nelson Mullins’ alternative legal service provider, NMSource, which recently celebrated its five-year anniversary.

Epstein noted that the division was established to address client needs for alternative staffing approaches and to assist with legal tasks that do not always necessitate conventional law firm resources. “We recognized five years ago that sometimes you can’t get all that work done with traditional law firm resources, and also sometimes our clients don’t want the work to be done by traditional law firm resources,” he said.

Epstein noted that NMSource has become a core function of the firm itself as this approach not only strengthens client relationships but also positions the firm to adapt to industry trends, such as diversification of revenue streams, private equity interest in legal services, and the need for greater flexibility in staffing.

“As you get farther away from the practice of law, you need people running that business who don’t just think like lawyers, and that’s when it may need to be an actual separate entity because to ensure its success, you need to apply metrics against that new entity and run that new entity in away that law firms are not generally run.”
