Lawsuit unlikely to spur change in Rays’ ownership, lawyers say

Tampa Bay Business Journal

With local baseball fans wondering whether a recent lawsuit against Tampa Bay Rays owner Stu Sternberg would lead to a change in ownership, the Tampa Bay Business Journal turned to Nelson Mullins partner Todd Norman for insight. Despite the speculation, Norman explained that the lawsuit is really about tax issues and litigation where minority owners might be “trying to exert control over him to handle their financial problem.”

According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, the complaint alleges that the limited partners had allocated more than $150 million in taxable income from 2017 and 2019 and no distributions had been made. The complaint also alleges Sternberg has muscled the limited partners out of the way to increase his stake in the franchise.

Norman said, “The case is way more complicated than the slam dunk the complaint makes the case seem.”
