Nelson Mullins partner and co-chair of the Value-Based Care Group, Ed White, was recently interviewed on the Compliance Perspectives Podcast discussing the rising focus on value-based care. The podcast explored the implementation of value-based care in healthcare, focusing on the mandatory Transforming Episode Accountability Model (TEAM) program launching in 2026. The program requires 741 selected hospitals to collaborate with various providers to coordinate care for five surgical procedures, with payment structures involving both potential shared savings and financial risk based on meeting cost and quality targets.
White provided insight into compliance considerations and regulatory developments.
"The bottom line is, with this new regulatory regime, you can create a low-risk environment or framework within to work on a value-based initiative like the TEAM program," White said. "And it truly allows you to more closely align providers in ways that you've not been able to do so in the past."
White emphasized that compliance teams should focus on "getting good at partnering with these other providers" through innovative care coordination arrangements, noting that consultants project two-thirds of hospitals may lose money initially in the TEAM program without effective collaboration strategies.
