Confidence in Government and Changes in Lobbying Practices - With Dwight Drake

Bourbon in The Back Room

Columbia partner and government relations attorney Dwight Drake recently joined former South Carolina State Senators Vincent Sheheen and Joel Lourie for an episode of their podcast, “Bourbon in The Back Room.” The group discussed South Carolina government and politics, the government on a nationwide level, public opinion of the government today, Drake’s vast experience, and much more.

Drake took a deep dive into his early interest in politics and government, his work as a young adult in a textile mill in upstate South Carolina with his father, earning his degree from the University of Georgia, his military service in Vietnam allowing him to pursue law school, earning a position as a law clerk for Governor John West, and his deeper escalation into government and legal work.

Drake also discussed his time as campaign manager for Dick Riley’s election as governor and his time as Riley’s chief political and legislative assistant. During his time on Riley’s staff, he led the lobbying efforts that led to the passage of the nationally-recognized Education Improvement Act as well as several amendments to the South Carolina Constitution, including the authorization for governors to serve two terms and the creation of the South Carolina Court of Appeals.

At Nelson Mullins, Drake focuses his legal practice on government relations, legislative issues, and disputes involving government contracts. Maintaining an active litigation practice, he has argued before the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Bourbon in The Back Room is a podcast with nearly 100 episodes that all go behind the scenes with Sheheen and Lourie to study the “important, fun, and sometimes weird world of South Carolina politics.” The podcast has proven to be a fascinating listen for audiences, earning it a 4.8-star review on Apple Podcasts.
