How DOJ's New Data Security Rules Leave HIPAA In The Dust

Long familiar with the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, healthcare compliance professionals now have another reason to ensure their organizations know their data and pay close attention to their data transactions.
The U.S. Department of Justice National Security Division's data security program prohibits or restricts certain transactions with foreign nations and persons involving U.S. government-related data or bulk U.S. sensitive personal data. The program went into effect April 8, with a 90-day period of limited enforcement. As of July 8, individuals and entities in the U.S. were expected to comply with the data security program and additional affirmative due diligence requirements will go into effect in October.
