Celebrating 100 Years of Commercial Radio

Nov. 2, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of what is widely recognized as the first commercial radio broadcast when Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, under the call sign KDKA, broadcast the live returns of the Harding-Cox presidential election.

Senior Policy Advisor Ron Klink will host a commemorative broadcast from near the “K” building location in East Pittsburgh, where KDKA was located. It will be carried on the Duquesne University YouTube channel. A brief documentary about that historical event will be part of the evening’s event, and there will be a live reenactment of the event itself. Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto will be there with an official proclamation as will various political leaders who wish to mark this important milestone in communications.

A former member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing the 4th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, Klink worked 24 years as a television broadcaster, the last 14 of which he was an award-winning anchor/reporter for KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh and anchored one of the top-rated newscasts in the market.
