John B. Hagerty is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP who practices in Charleston in the areas of corporate law and real estate. Mr. Hagerty represents various technology clients regarding corporate structure, securities law, corporate governance, and intellectual property. Mr. Hagerty has extensive experience in the development, zoning and construction of hotels, the sale of hospitals, the purchase and sale of businesses, commercial and industrial tracts, and state and local investment incentives for large capital investments in South Carolina.

Mr. Hagerty litigated the largest bankruptcy case ever filed in South Carolina, a matter involving golf courses across the country. A member of the South Carolina Bar, he is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Mr. Hagerty holds a Certified Commercial Investment Member Certificate for his knowledge of financial matters in real estate.

Mr. Hagerty is a member of the Society of International Business Fellows, a group of business leaders throughout the Southeast and Southwest. Mr. Hagerty is on the board and serves as counsel for Spoleto Festival, USA and assists various other not-for-profit organizations including the Palmetto Project and the Charleston Concert Association.  Mr. Hagerty serves as chairman of the Patriots Point Development Authority, which includes various golf courses, hotels, and the Yorktown Aircraft Carrier in Mt. Pleasant.

In 1977, Mr. Hagerty earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi and the International Moot Court Team. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago in 1975, while working in the First Scholar Program at the First National Bank of Chicago. In 1973, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, cum laude, from Harvard University where he participated in two varsity sports, winning the Burr Award as the most outstanding student athlete of Harvard College.
