RALEIGH, NC — Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Raleigh partner Patricia A. Markus has been selected as the next President-Elect Designate by the Board of Directors of the American Health Law Association (AHLA).
“I am absolutely thrilled and honored by this new opportunity to serve the health law community. Participation in AHLA activities has remarkably enriched my life, both professionally and personally, and I look forward to working beside other leaders, staff, and members to create similar learning and growth opportunities for the next generation of health law professionals,” Markus said.
As President-Elect Designate, Markus will play a key role in guiding the Association’s strategic planning efforts leading up to her term as president, which will begin July 1, 2023. Markus joined AHLA’s Board of Directors in 2015 and currently serves as the Chair of the Practice Groups and Special Councils Board Committee. She previously served as a Vice Chair and then Chair of the Health Information and Technology Practice Group from 2008 to 2015, and as a member of the Health Information and Technology Program Planning Committee from 2012 to 2014.

Markus has been recognized by such publications as Chambers USA and the Best Lawyers in America for her excellence in healthcare law practice. She advises clients on healthcare regulatory compliance and transactional matters, with a special focus on health information privacy, security, and technology issues. She speaks and publishes on healthcare topics frequently, and she has served in a variety of leadership roles both at AHLA and with other healthcare organizations.
Markus received her B.A. with honors in English from Haverford College and her J.D. from Boston College Law School. She is a past president of the North Carolina Society of Healthcare Attorneys and a former chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Health Law Section.
