COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mergers & Acquisitions has recognized Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP with honorable mentions for two separate deals in its 2021 Top 10 Middle-Market Deals of the Year.

The awards, now in their 14th year, focus on the most compelling deals of the last 14 months and acknowledge the companies that came together to make them happen in the most challenging of times.

The first deal is in the FinTech and banking space. Under the leadership of Washington, D.C. partner Jon Talcott, the firm represented BankMobile Technologies, a subsidiary of Customers Bancorp, Inc., in a $140 million acquisition by Megalith Financial Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The consideration included approximately $20 million in assumed debt owed to Customers Bank, cash, and MFAC stock. BankMobile Technologies Inc. is a wholly owned FinTech subsidiary of Customers Bank that provides digital banking platforms, disbursements for higher educational institutions and students, workplace banking services, and white-label digital banking services.

Along with Talcott, the deal team included Washington, D.C. partners Peter Strand and Mike Bradshaw and associate Kaylen Loflin.

The second deal is in the telecom space. Led by Columbia partner Tom Brumgardt, Nelson Mullins represented the North State Telecommunications Corp. in its $240 million sale to Segra, one of the largest infrastructure bandwidth companies in the eastern United States. North State is a provider of high-speed bandwidth services in the fast-growing Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. The acquisition expands Segra's fiber network by nearly 3,000 miles and brings Segra's industry-leading service and an enhanced product offering to North State's customers.

Besides Brumgardt, the deal team included Charleston partner Geiza Vargas-Vargas and Greenville partner Lee Kiser.
