NEW YORK — The Financial Times has ranked Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP as the 22nd Most Innovative Law Firm in North America in its 2019 "North America Innovative Lawyers" report.

In addition, the report ranked Nelson Mullins as a commended firm in North America in three separate categories this year:

• Enabling Business Growth and Transformation: The firm was commended for guiding Amalgamated Bank in 2018 through its $58.5 million acquisition of New Resource Bank and its $104 million initial public offering, becoming the first union-owned bank in the United States to go public.
• Creating a New Standard: The firm was commended for advising San Diego Workforce Partnership, which is in partnership with the University of California San Diego Extension, on the creation of renewable learning funds to support students receiving essential workforce training. These income share agreements allow graduates to pay for their education and training using a percentage of their income only once they have a $40,000 salary job. The program is designed to help displaced workers access training to develop new skills.
• New Products and Services: The firm was commended for automating regulatory compliance to meet the standards set by the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which covers data privacy in the healthcare industry. The firm’s web platform, HIPAA2Z, gives recommendations and tailors documents to client’s needs, saving them time and cost.

The annual report combines The Financial Times' independent journalism with extensive research carried out by RSG Consulting. The report is issued in conjunction with the FT Innovative Lawyer Awards, which were presented in New York on December 9, 2019.

These two organizations have devised a methodology to rank lawyers, firms and in-house counsel on innovation. Each entry is scored out of 10 points for originality, leadership, and impact, for a maximum of 30 points. The scores are then benchmarked against each other to arrive at the final rankings. In addition, the overall rankings for the most innovative law firm is an aggregate of each firm’s performance across all 12 categories in the report.
