WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Charleston office managing partner John C. McElwaine has been selected as a 2023 World Trademark Review Global Leader. Now in its fifth edition, the guide, entitled the “WTR Global Leaders: Private Practice” lists McElwaine as a Global Leader in the United States-D.C. Metro area section.
McElwaine a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group and is the office managing partner of the Charleston office. He is also based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He has been involved with cutting edge trademark, domain name and copyright litigation, as well as actions brought at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and proceedings under the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). His work in strategic counseling involves advising clients on intellectual property matters, including the assignment, licensing and development of applications and other technology, as well as brand protection measures on the Internet and within online social media networks.
He has been active since 2009 with ICANN and in leadership with the Intellectual Property Constituency. In November 2022, he was elected as Vice-Chairman for Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council representing the Non-contracted Parties House. The GNSO council is the policy-making body of ICANN, the not-for-profit partnership dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable, and interoperable. The 21 members of the council govern policy development within ICANN.
To qualify for inclusion in the guide, individuals must be ranked in the gold tier of the World Trademark Review 1000. The WTR1000 identifies the world’s leading trademark law firms and individuals in more than 80 global jurisdictions through an extensive research process led by full-time analysts. In addition, the United States section boasts 20 state-specific chapters, while an international section identifies the firms that have secured WTR 1000 listings in multiple regions.
