CHARLESTON, S.C. — Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Charleston Office Managing Partner John C. McElwaine has been recognized in the 2023 edition of World Trademark Review 1000 (WTR).
McElwaine is ranked in WTR1000 both nationally for trademark enforcement and litigation and in the D.C. Metro Area for trademark enforcement and litigation and prosecution and strategy.
He is based in Charleston and in Washington, D.C.
He is the managing partner of the Charleston office and a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. He has been involved with cutting edge trademark, domain name and copyright litigation, as well as actions brought at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and proceedings under the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). His work in the area of strategic counseling involves advising clients on intellectual property matters, including the assignment, licensing and development of applications and other technology, as well as brand protection measures on the Internet and within online social media networks.
McElwaine has been active since 2009 with ICANN and in leadership with the Intellectual Property Constituency. In November 2022, he was elected as Vice-Chairman for Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council representing the Non-contracted Parties House. The GNSO council is the policy-making body of ICANN, the not-for-profit partnership dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable, and interoperable. The 21 members of the council govern policy development within ICANN.
According to the organization, WTR1000 identifies the leading professionals and firms that are deemed outstanding at obtaining, protecting, managing, enforcing and monetizing trademarks.
