The Riley Institute at Furman University honored Richard W. “Dick” Riley on Oct. 3 with a bronze bust to commemorate the institute’s 20th anniversary. The bust will be installed in Johns Hall at Furman University (Department of Politics and International Affairs). Riley, former South Carolina Governor and U.S. Secretary of Education, announced the launch of the Riley Institute at Furman University in October 1999. The institute’s goal was to “bring the world to Furman” for the benefit of Furman students and the community. Its aim is to attract political figures and prominent journalists, to support students’ work in Washington, D.C. and overseas, and to bring scholars in residence to Furman.
