In an article published on August 28, 2023 in Part B News, Trish Markus shares her insight on how healthcare practices can deal with patients who are difficult for the practice to handle.
“The symptoms of a disease for which the patient is seeking treatment shouldn’t be used as the reason to terminate the physician/patient relationship, and such a termination could be treated as a violation of anti-discrimination laws,” says Markus. “But if that same patient is not following her treatment regimen, refuses to pay her medical bills or becomes violent toward staff or other patients, termination under those circumstances would be a more appropriate option, provided appropriate notice and information regarding other potential providers are given to the patient.”
