In a March 2023 opinion piece published by Forbes and other outlets, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP namesake partner Dick Riley was highlighted for his leadership in advancing quality public education. Riley began his elected public service in the South Carolina Legislature where he served in the House from 1963 through 1966 and then in the Senate from 1967–1977. He was elected Governor of South Carolina in 1978 and again in 1984, becoming the first two-term governor of South Carolina. In 1993, President Clinton selected Riley to serve in his Cabinet as the United States Secretary of Education, a role he held from 1993–2001.
