Federal and State Policy Team Leader Chris Cushing Reflects on Former Senator Bob Dole in the Wake of His Passing

Washington-based Federal and State Policy Team Leader Chris Cushing was recently quoted in a Politico article regarding the passing of Bob Dole, former Senate Republican leader, presidential candidate, and war hero. Cushing, along with several others who had the pleasure of working with Dole, reflect on the memories they shared, all stating what a wonderful, generous, and humorous man he was.

As a former staffer, Cushing met Dole during his long and distinguished political career. While Dole ran for president in 1988, he ensured Cushing and his other staffers were paid when the campaign was determining what outstanding debts it had. "He just always thought of every person," said Cushing.

As a veteran himself, Dole played a significant part at the 2004 dedication of the World War II Memorial. One of the most popular monuments in D.C. might have never been built if he had not been adamant. He played a constitutional role in acquiring almost $200 million for the construction of the memorial.

Dole was determined on visiting the memorial as often as he could, meeting WWII veterans traveling to D.C. on Honor Flights. He battled lung cancer for nearly a year that he ultimately succumbed to. He was a respected man who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
