In a column published in the April 4 Orlando Business Journal, Nelson Mullins attorney Holly Collins discussed how the price to file with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has increased, making it more expensive to register and maintain a trademark.
"As a result of the higher fees, owners of small to mid-sized businesses may ask whether it is still worthwhile to attempt to register their trademarks," Collins said.
However, business owners should keep in mind a trademark is an important part of their brand, and that consumers often make purchasing decisions based on branding and reputation. Registering a trademark to protect branding is still worth the effort, even with the increased price, Collins said.
