Enabling America’s Offshore Renewable Energy Opportunity

By Newman Jackson Smith

Marine Link, Offshore Engineer

In recent articles for Marine Link and Offshore Engineer, Charleston partner Jacks Smith describes the Biden administration’s renewed focus on offshore wind energy, and the latest supporting developments. A Partner at Nelson Mullins’ Charleston office, Smith practices in the areas of environmental law and litigation, administrative law, land use law and constitutional law – all relevant to bringing offshore wind energy’s potential to fruition here in the United States.

“The time for offshore wind development has arrived, and with it the opportunity to grow the U.S. maritime infrastructure needed to haul, install and maintain a critically needed renewable energy resource,” writes Smith.

His article continues to describe the myriad of new challenges and opportunities across the nation for offshore wind, including a recent appropriations bill that affirms U.S. jurisdiction on the Outer Continental Shelf subsoil and seabed to include regulation of non-mineral energy sources.

Of this and other opportunities, Smith writes, “The U.S. maritime industry must take this opportunity and participate as a significant stakeholder in the new laws, regulations and decisions being made now that enable offshore wind in America.”
