AAPI Success—Debunking the Model Minority Myth

By Franklin Chou

Law.com

In an article published in Law.com on July 12, Nelson Mullins senior associate Franklin Chou provides commentary on the fallacies in minority stereotypes of Asian Americans and the negative consequences of these generalizations throughout history.

“Much of this history perpetuates inaccurate and harmful stereotypes and generalizations of Asian Americans as successful, bright, educated and hardworking. But historically, that narrative has been very different,” Chou explained. “The perpetuation of this stereotype ignores the challenges faced by a large number of Asian Americans and dismisses the efforts of Asian immigrants and refugees’ successes as mere biological, innate abilities and perpetuates the assumption that Asian Americans do not have a place in the dialogue of what it means to be a minority.”

In debunking this model minority myth, Chou offered extensive insight and data to provide historical context and perspective on its negative impact.
