Patricia A. Markus, a partner in Nelson Mullins’ Raleigh office, will moderate a panel discussion titled “Health Data is More Precious than Gold: HIPAA Enforcement and Biosecurity Concerns” at the American Health Law Association’s Annual Meeting in Chicago June 25-27, 2018.
The panel will feature the comments of Serena Mosley-Day, Acting Senior Advisor for HIPAA Compliance and Enforcement of the Office for Civil Rights, and Edward You, Supervisory Special Agent in the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, Biological Countermeasures Unit with the FBI. Panelists will address the Office for Civil Rights’ recent HIPAA enforcement actions, patterns of noncompliance with HIPAA, and lessons learned. Attendees also will learn about emerging economic and national security risks related to foreign companies’ increasing investment in U.S. genetic testing and genome sequencing companies and the FBI’s concerns about how biological data may be exploited.
