Nelson Mullins' Marc Williams Speaking at WDTL Annual Meeting in Washington
West Virginia Managing Partner Marc E. Williams is speaking at the annual meeting for the Washington Defense Trial Lawyers (WDTL) organization. The "Litigating in the Spotlight: Handling the High Profile Case," session will address several points, including:
- Lawyers have to be aware of the ethical restrictions on speaking about pending litigation. Model Rule 3.6 limits statements that could prejudice a judicial proceeding;
- Work with the client’s communication staff to tailor a message in response to press requests. “We don’t comment on pending litigation” doesn’t get it done in today’s 24 news cycle.
- Even if you don’t comment, you are speaking to the press through your statements in court and through your pleadings and motions.
The 2018 meeting runs from July 19 through July 22 and includes sessions on other topics including:
- Young Lawyers Program: Practical Tips for Building Your Practice While Preserving Your Reputation
- Significant Decisions: Implications of Volk v. DeMeerleer
- Advanced Trial Techniques and Practices
- Thoughts and Observations on the State of Appellate Practice in Washington
- What Would You Do? Ethical Dilemmas That Actually Happened
