Bob Coffield will be a featured speaker at the 2025 Spring Conference of the West Virginia Society for Healthcare Risk Management (WVSHRM).
Coffield’s presentation, titled “Navigating Stark, Anti-kickback, Fraud and Abuse Investigations, and Beyond: A Risk Manager’s Guide,” will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of the federal and state regulatory frameworks that govern healthcare fraud and abuse. The session will focus on critical laws such as the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS), and the False Claims Act (FCA), and how these statutes affect financial relationships and referral practices within healthcare organizations.
The presentation is designed to help healthcare risk managers, compliance officers, and hospital leadership develop a stronger understanding of legal and regulatory obligations, while also offering practical strategies for identifying compliance risks and managing exposure. Coffield will also discuss the investigative processes commonly used by federal and state enforcement agencies—including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Justice, the West Virginia Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, and private insurers—as well as the implications such investigations can have on providers.
