Trending Fraud and Abuse Developments and How to Address Them

Join our Nelson Mullins healthcare partners, Gabe Imperato, Bob Wade, and Edgar Bueno, who will be speaking during several sessions in discussion of the latest real-world issues, trends, and practical applications in compliance programs.

Imperato will participate in a panel discussion on “Compliance Professionals and the False Claims Act”, which will review False Claims Act developments and compliance risk, the return of overpayments and deliberate ignorance and reckless disregard, and retaliation and legal update. He is the managing partner of the Fort Lauderdale office and represents individuals and organizations accused of healthcare fraud and assisting and advising healthcare organizations on corporate governance and compliance matters. He is board certified as a specialist in Health Law by the Florida Bar. He is also certified in Health Care Compliance (CHC) by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics and the Health Care Compliance Association (SCCE/HCCA).

Wade will join a panel discussion on "Trending Fraud and Abuse Developments and How to Address Them", which will assess key enforcement actions and guidance on Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark, EKRA, and CMS, explore how organizations are using the value-based safe harbors and exceptions, and identify compliance program and risk management best practices. Wade has more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry and counsels clients on fraud and abuse issues, fair market value, commercial reasonableness and developing, monitoring, and documenting effective healthcare compliance programs. He also serves clients nationally as a compliance professional.

Bueno will join a panel discussion on "Discovery Hot Topics in FCA Qui Tam Litigation", which will give an understanding of the types of discovery issues that may arise in qui tam litigation, employing effective strategies when responding to discovery requests, and special FCA discovery considerations. He has more than 20 years of experience defending clients under investigation by the government. He focuses his practice on civil, criminal, and administrative matters involving healthcare fraud and abuse. He also has extensive experience in defending actions brought under the federal False Claims Act (FCA) and similar state laws.
