Nelson Mullins partners Carrie Hanger and Trish Markus will participate in the North Carolina Society of Health Care Attorneys’ (NCSHCA) 2024 Annual Meeting and Conference on September 13 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The conference offers educational CLE presentations on a range of topics including enforcement trends and hot topics in health care antitrust, new developments in healthcare fraud and abuse cases, corporate practice of medicine, data privacy updates, legislative update, and case law updates.
Hanger, NCSHCA president-elect and program chair, will participate in the opening remarks, while Markus will lead the closing session, “Mind the Privacy Gap: Traps for the Unwary in the Health Data Environment (Ethics/Technology),” alongside Clara Cottrell, Assistant General Counsel of Compliance and Privacy for the BASF Corporation.
The session will focus on the flurry of health data-focused privacy laws and regulations being enacted by federal agencies and states, which stems in large part from the incomplete protections of HIPAA and the concern that, absent a comprehensive U.S. federal privacy law, certain health and health-adjacent information falls into a privacy gap.The presenters will outline ways to navigate the complexity of the current environment and ponder what the future may hold for data privacy.
