IRVING, Texas — Jason Torres, the office manager of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough’s Dallas office, has always felt that giving back to the community in which you work is important — it just takes a phone call to get involved, or take the step toward giving back to young people.

So, he called up his cousin, Kesha Valtierra, who is an assistant principal at F.M. Gilbert Elementary School in Irving, Texas. Valtierra is a seasoned educator of 25 years with Irving ISD. She quickly agreed to offer up opportunities for lawyers and staff from the firm’s Dallas office to get involved at the school.

Torres, senior technology coach Julie Clegg, and associates Lane Ballinger and Assumpta Iheaso jumped at the chance to go read to students in several classrooms at Gilbert Elementary.

“I loved it,” Clegg said. “I’m an educator at heart (and) I might have overstayed my welcome in the first room,” she said, jokingly.

The group chose from a set of books to read to the students. And the group read to students in four different classrooms with grade levels ranging from Pre-K to third grade. If you ask Torres, he says that he and his colleagues might have enjoyed the experience just as much, if not more, than the children at Gilbert Elementary.

“It was really fulfilling for all of us,” said Torres, who also serves on the Dallas offices social committee.

Iheaso had just recently started with the firm but jumped at the chance to get involved: “It was a really awesome experience,” she said. “And it was just a very wholesome experience.”

“You just get busy and the people I talk to — there’s tension in litigation,” Ballinger said. “It was fun to work with the kids.”
