The Gift of Service: Columbia Office of Nelson Mullins Celebrates 125th Anniversary Through Volunteer Work

Nelson Mullins’ Columbia office attorneys and staff dedicated a day of service to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Saturday, January 15, by volunteering their time to provide general rehab work at the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands, an organization that currently serves more than 2,200 children in after-school and other activities.  The firm did work including interior and exterior painting, power washing, construction of picnic tables and raised garden beds, and replanting planters.  Over 70 employees and family members participated in the service project and enjoyed a party afterwards at the Hunter Gatherer Brewery at the Hanger.

In the months to follow January, the Columbia office will extend its voluntarism by, collectively, volunteering a total of 125 hours each quarter year to the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands’ Power Hour program, a leading organization in youth development transforming the community by providing youth with impactful, fun, and educational opportunities in a safe environment.

Nelson Mullins kicked off the month of service in its Columbia office with a blood drive for the American Red Cross. Donating 27 pints, Nelson Mullins professionals gave enough to potentially save 78 lives.

In January 1897, attorney P.H. Nelson left his position as solicitor of the Fifth Judicial Circuit to set up a private law practice in Columbia, S.C.   Today, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP offers legal services in 11 states and the District of Columbia from 25 offices with 850+ attorneys, policy advisors, and professionals. It is the 71st largest law firm in the nation based on 2020 gross revenues, according to The American Lawyer’s Am Law 100, a legal news organization that tracks law firm growth.

Throughout 2022, Nelson Mullins will be sharing seminal events from its history that highlight its growth from a one-man firm in 1897 to where we are today.

Established in 1897, Nelson Mullins is an Am Law 100 firm of more than 850 attorneys and government relations professionals with offices in 11 states and Washington, D.C. For more information on the firm, go to
